Older Adults are Out of the Rocking Chair and Online

Dec 2

It’s no secret, people ages 45 and up are flocking to the internet. Though, the numbers may be surprising. According to the recent CTAM Pulse report, over 90% use email and over 70% shop online.

Those ages 65+ are avid users of the internet and are the generational leaders of online activity. 94% of “Matures” use email, 77% shop online, 70-71% use the internet for news and health information, 59% do their banking online and 47% play free online games.

Similarly, Baby Boomers (those aged 45-64) are heavy users. 93% report they use email, 71% shop online, 67-73% read news and gather information and 66% use online banking.

While some older adults don’t have the latest in computer technology, they have discovered the strengths of the online world and aren’t afraid to use them. How is your company tapping into these important generational groups?

How’s your View?

Oct 30

comScore recently updated its “Natural Born Clickers” study it did in conjunction with Starcom USA and Tacoda two years ago. The number of people who click on display ads has decreased from 32% of internet users in July 2007 to 16% in March 2009. Furthermore, only 8% of internet users make up 85% of all display ad clicks.

Are online display ads done? Hardly. In the words of Linda Anderson, comScore VP of marketing solutions, “… marketers who attempt to optimize their advertising campaigns solely around the click are assigning no value to the 84% of Internet users who don’t click on an ad…The study indicates that click-through rates are not the best metric to gage performance and that marketers would be wise to focus on “view-through impact.”

A companion comScore study, “Whither the Click?”, released in June showed that online display ads increased traffic for brand-sites, trademark searches and online and offline sales. Here’s the key: traffic increased whether users clicked on the ad or not. At Envano, we know that some of that traffic uptick is due to exposure via social networking sites such as FaceBook and Twitter. Some of it is due to smart search engine and email marketing efforts. Some of it is due to plain old “word of mouth” advertising (and word travels fast on the internet!)

It’s not all about the click. It’s more about the total view. How’s yours?

Social Media = More Brand Searches

Oct 28

When it comes to brands, social media users are an energetic bunch. A recent study by GroupM Search and comScore, Inc., showed a direct link between online search behavior and “brand discovery” via social media. As Graham Mudd, comScore’s VP said, “Social media-exposed consumers are far more likely to search for brand and product-related terms, and click on a brand’s paid search ad.”

Also, worth noting:

  • social media users are almost twice as likely to search and make a list of brands and products for purchase compared to other users.
  • Users exposed to “influenced” social media and paid search showed a 223% increase in search behavior over those exposed to paid ads alone.

How engaged is your brand with the social media sect?

Americans Spend 17% of Internet Time on Social Networking

Oct 15

Marketers are often tasked with trying to “meet people where they are.” In recent years social network sites have made this a little easier. According to Nielsen Co., Americans spend 17% of their internet time on social sites like Facebook and blogging sites. That’s an increase of six percent over last year. While many marketing budgets are tightening, ad spending on social sites has doubled. Are you meeting your customers where they are?

26% of Facebook Users Connect by Mobile Phone

Sep 29

In an attempt to expand its social networking reach, Facebook in March made Facebook Connect available to IPhone apps. The site took another big leap at the beginning of September when it unveiled Facebook Connect for Mobile Web. The latest move means that all mobile sites can allow Facebook IDs and login, social data retrieval (with permission from Facebook user) and that Facebook users can publish from their mobile devices. This should bump Facebook’s mobile profile since already 26% percent of the site’s 250 million “active’ users connect to the site in this manner.

20% of all Tweets are Brand-Specific

Sep 17

A research team at Penn State University found that 20% of all Tweets on the popular social networking site Twitter deal with brand-specific products or services. According to Jim Jansen, associate professor of information science and technology at Penn State, “People are using tweets to express their reaction, both positive and negative, as they engage with these products and services.” He added, “Tweets are about as close as one can get to the customer point of purchase for products and services.” The study also indicated that brand-related tweets provide companies with a “rich source” of information which can be used to further build brands and awareness. Social Media Stats: Marketers Don’t Know Where to Start

Sep 15

According to a report by eMarketer, social media will be used by more than 80% of brand marketers within a year’s time. Currently, nearly 60% of brand marketers claim to use social media and only 13% say they have no plans.

Here are some of the barriers to social media marketing:

  • 37% of brand marketers and 31% of agency marketers claim they don’t know enough about social media and don’t know where to start.
  • 37% of brand marketers and 28% of agency marketers indicate there is no effective way to measure social media efforts.
  • About 25% of both brand and agency marketers say their budget does not support social media.

Social media seems to be here to stay. As the data shows above, the biggest hurdle to social media is marketers not knowing what to do or where to begin. Envano knows how to get over that hurdle.

Teens don’t flock to Twitter

Sep 14

The stats are in. Teens don’t flock to Twitter and they have little to do with the popular social networking site’s exceptional growth. According to recent Nielsen NetRatings data, 25% of internet users are aged 25 or less yet only 16% of Twitter’s users are in the same age group. Who’s flocking to Twitter? Those in the 25-54 age group make up 64% of Twitter’s users while those 55+ make up 20%. Over 80% of Twitter’s users are over the age of 25! Does this surprise you? More importantly, is Twitter potentially part of your marketing mindset? Let Envano help you decide.

Google Users are Loyal but Microsoft/Yahoo are Closing the Gap

Sep 8

Google seems to have cornered the loyalty market. Recent data from comScore shows that Google has 84% of the overall search market while Microsoft and Yahoo together hold 73%. Where it gets interesting is that Google searchers conduct an average of 54.5 searches per month while Microsoft and Yahoo users combined conduct 26.9 searches. Also, 80% of Google user searches happen on Google products compared to Microsoft/Yahoo where the rate is 33%.

Google currently has 65% of the US search market while Microsoft and Yahoo together hold 28%. According to comScore’s Eli Goodman, if Microsoft/Yahoo users increased their number of searches to near Google user search levels, Microsoft/Yahoo could hold more than 40% of the market share. He added that the Microsoft/Yahoo alliance represents a real opportunity to overtake Google.
