With a recent push towards video in all things digital, you may have decided to incorporate video into your website. Great idea! However, before you rush into loading up videos EVERYWHERE, there are a few tricks about video implementation you should know.

1. Video is engaging.

One of the benefits of video is how engaging it is to customers. The visual richness of a video makes it more captivating than a static image. Because of this, video should be used strategically in places on your website where you want to catch the attention of your audience. For example, one of the trends lately is to include a video in the splash (which is something we have done on our website). Doing so can engage the audience right away, without requiring them to scroll.

2. You cannot compete with YouTube (nor should you want to).

Video is a great way to engage your audience, but not if you overuse it. Video should complement your website, but not turn it into a YouTube-esqe platform that is dominated by videos. Make sure to limit video usage to only the areas that it makes the most sense and enhances your content. Video implementation should be the sprinkles on the sundae that is your website.

3. Sound can distract from content.

Having a video automatically play when a user reaches your webpage can be off-putting. Depending on the placement of your video, the user may not even realize there is a video on your site when they first hear the sound. Having sound automatically start playing can distract your audience from the other content on the page that you want them to consume and may cause an increase in users leaving your site.

4. A good video can deliver messages quickly.

Another benefit of video is that it can deliver a message more quickly than copy can. A well-crafted video gets to the point quickly, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. Consider using video to show a series of steps. It can be a more engaging way to share a process, rather than writing it out.

5. Video is only as effective as the strategy behind it.

Video can be a great weapon to have in the digital space. However, it needs to be supported by a well-thought-out strategy in order to be successful. Using video for the sake of video will get you nowhere. But, creating strategic videos can showcase the personality of your brand and help you stand out. Used correctly, regularly posting new videos can also encourage re-visits, keeping your audience engaged and excited about what is coming next.
